Discussion of constructing Blue Mountain Observatory began in early 1967.  From correspondence, it appears Dr. Margrave, the department's new astronomer, and Dr. Jakobson, chair, were the driving forces behind the project.  Groundbreaking occurred somewhere around September 28, 1970.  The observatory building was completed on October 19, 1970 with the 16" Boller and Chivens telescope installed by crane on November 18, 1970.
