We are sad to report that David Friend died on May 22, 2008, following a bout with cancer. David was our friend and colleague and he will be greatly missed. A full obituary appeared in the Missoulian. David Friend was an excellent teacher. David won the 2004-2005 UM Distinguished Teaching Award. The nomination letter for the award was written by Professor Jim Jacobs and is very descriptive of Dave as a high-quality teacher. There was also an article written about Dave after he won the award. A memorial fund has been established in David Friend's honor at the UM Foundation. The proceeds of this fund will go towards establishing an award for excellence in teaching in the sciences.
